The large windows face south. The vent on the rear, middle of the roof was something all old schoolhouses had for the indoor (outhouse style) toilet - today we'd call it a compost toilet.
Below: is an old shed on the property with No Trespassing sign! The property seems abandoned - there's no steps to the side door!
That is Alf Essey's House. My grandmother Clara Phillips Macleod, lived across the Port Hill Road from Bessie & Alf in the 50s & 60s. Bessie's parents lived in a little house next door and kept goats, which must have accounted for their long lives? Arthur Wright lived from 1852-1960 and his wife Georgina lived to be 104.
ReplyDeleteThey are buried in the Nazarene Cemetery across the road from the Essery house. My Grandfather Roderick Macleod had built a church on the corner across from Alf's house. I don't know if I have a picture or not?
I will ask my Mum if their house was a school. It could be from Mt. Pleasant Airbase as a lot of the buildings in that area were purchased when the airbase was wound down after WWII.
