Alma School, No. 43

This is the one-room schoolhouse I attended my first five years of school, 1967-1972.  It was located in western PEI at the corner of Rte. 2 (Western Road) and Rte. 151 (Centerline Road).  The school district was established in 1878 and a new school was built by carpenter Henry Graves.  The first school teacher was John Foley of Charlottetown.  The photo below is from the collection of Donna (Barbour) MacPhee.
My father attended school here in the late 1930's - one of his teachers was Vera (Rennie) MacNeill.  In the early 1980s she taught my youngest brother Kenny at Alberton Elementary.  My father is 80 now, his teacher Mrs. MacNeill, is in her late 90s and still very active - imagine!!!
The two drawings above, Alma School and Lauretta School, were drawn by Donna (Barbour) MacPhee  as a student in Alma in the mid-1950's.
The photo above of Alma School Students was taken in 1897 - The teacher was George Hardy, far left with bicycle. Daisy (Rix) Barbour recorded each persons name on the back.  cf. Donna (Barbour) MacPhee collection.
The photo above of Alma School Students was taken in 1912.  The teacher was Estelle Bowness Weeks ( back row #6 ).   Daisy (Rix) Barbour recorded each persons name on the back.  cf. Donna (Barbour) MacPhee collection.
The photo above are of the last students of Alma School - taken in the winter of 1972.  I am second in on the left, back row.  Our teacher, on the far right, was Mildred (Dunbar) Barbour of Alma.  In 1972 Island-wide school amalgamation was underway and the era of one-room schoolhouses was coming to an end - we moved on to Elmsdale Elementary and the older students to Alberton High School.
